The HN Top 5

The students in Mrs. Herlihy's homeroom have come up with their top 5 favorites from the first half of the school year. Here they are, in no particular order!

1) Math/Science with Mrs. Herlihy
Mrs. Herlihy, along with Mrs. Nolan, make math fun. We loved doing the "Mr. Decimal" project! We also like going to the computer lab to do math projects and FasttMath. Mrs. Graham is our awesome computer teacher :) In science, we enjoyed doing the "By Golly, By Gum" project. We actually got to chew gum and watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! The point of the project was to measure the mass of the gum and see if it gained or lost mass. It was awesome!

2) History/ELA with Mr. Norton
In History, we have enjoyed doing many fun projects. One was the "Mayan Sacrifices" where Mr. Norton taught us all about how the Mayans worshipped their gods. Another project was "Silk Road." We learned all about how the Europeans traded gold and jewels for silk, perfume, and spices. In ELA, we did a project called "Bag Full of Me" where we got to share a little bit about ourselves with the class.  We selected three items that abstractly represent our personalities and then we wrote a 5 paragraph essay about it. We have also enjoyed ePals, a combined ELA and Social Studies project. But if you are reading this, then you already know that! :)

3) Field Trips
So far this year, we have been on 3 field trips. The first one was to Wompatuck State Park. We spent the day hiking around in the woods. While we were there, we saw all kinds of plants and trees. The second field trip we took was to the NASA presentation. We learned about how the astronauts train for their space missions and we saw the food that they eat while in space. We even got to see an actual moon rock! The third field trip of the year was to the zoo. We saw lots of different animals, including ones that are endangered. It was interesting to see animals that we would not normally be able to see in our habitat.

4) Assemblies
This year at Abigail Adams, we have been fortunate to have many interesting assemblies. One of them was a "No Smoking" assembly and we got to see actual pig lungs! One set was healthy and the other set showed the effects of smoking. The set that showed smoking damage was gross! Another assembly was the Geography Bee. One student from each homeroom got to compete for the chance to go to Worcester and participate in the state Geography Bee. Our homeroom had a tie, so Troy and Liam both got to compete. We also had an assembly the day before Veteran's Day to celebrate the sacrifices veterans all over the country have made for us. We watched a video about Arlington Cemetery and sang patriotic songs. We also got to see pictures of veterans who are related to students and staff at our school. We really enjoy going to assemblies and learning about new things.

5) HN Team
Here's what we love about the HN team:
  • No bully zone
  • Green! (the color and recycling)
  • Our teachers
  • Random acts of kindness
  • HN T-Shirts (coming soon!)
  • The team quilt
  • Hey There Neighbor
  • Teamwork
Stay tuned for more exciting news from Mrs. Herlihy's class!

Introducing the HN Team

Hello! We are kids here in North America, in the country of the USA, here in the state of Massachusetts, in the small town of Weymouth.  We are fifth grade students in the Abigail Adams Middle School on the HN team.  Our teachers are Mr. Norton and Mrs.Herlihy.  Our team color is green and our team song is “Hey There Neighbor”!  We have a team symbol which is the HN that you can see.  It is a bully free zone in our classroom where no one should get picked on.  Every Friday we do something called Random Acts of Kindness. Random Acts of Kindness is when we acknowledge other peoples good deeds.
Mr. Norton teaches ELA (which stands for English Language Arts) and History. And Mrs. Herlihy teaches Math and Science. We also have another math teacher named Ms. Nolan. Mr. Norton gives funny nicknames to people and calls himself the nickname king.  We have a team mascot named Adam, who is a Japanese Fighting Fish.  We just went to an awesome field trip in another state. We are all smart and kind kids that care about everyone. When you become a HNer, you become a HNer  for life.  HN is a big baseball, basketball, and other sports team fans.
We have class representatives. The students names are Troy and Chloe and the other homerooms representative is Sam.  Mr. Norton loves a candy here called Baby Ruth’s. Please comment, we can not wait to write back to you!
We are all in this together!

Abigail Adams Middle School

We are fifth grade students at the Abigail Adams Middle School in Weymouth, Massachusetts.  Massachusetts is a state in the United States of America.  At The Abigail Adams Middle School we learn math, science, social studies, English language arts, health, reading, music, art, and gym.  All of these classes are 57 minutes, and we have six of these a day. We have the best principal ever, Mr. Birolini.  He is awesome at taking care of our school.  The school is safe and very adaptable.  The school includes 5Th and 6TH grades, so it is very big. It has three floors and an elevator.  We even have a fantastic theme song for our school called “Here at Abigail Adams.”
Our school also has many after school activities.  We can participate in Chess Club, Soccer, Basketball, Drama, Band, Yearbook, Book Club, Student Council, and many others.   There are many ways that kids get to and from school.  Some of the transportation choices are bus, walking, a ride from your parents, or riding a bike.  These are some of the things that make Abigail Adams Middle School so special.

Music We Enjoy

We love many different kinds of music in the United States. Our favorite kinds of music are rock, hip hop (not like a bunny), rap, country, and Spanish. Some people do not like these kinds of music. Romantic songs are popular but are NOT everyone's favorite! There are many artist that write great songs. Eminem is the greatest rapper ever. Music is something we believe in. Every song is made for a special reason. These are just a few kinds of music that we enjoy.

What kinds of music do you like? Do you play any instruments? What kinds of music do you dislike? Do you like them all? Do you like singing? Do you like 70s and 80s music? We hope you know a little about the music we like!

The Things We Do For Fun

We in America do many things for fun.  One of the activities we do for fun is that we play sports.  Some of the sports we play are football, soccer, baseball, basketball, and many more.  In the summer we may also go swimming.  You can swim in an indoor pool, an outdoor pool or the beach.  Another thing we do is that we go to a park or an amusement park.  In the amusement park there are rides.  Rides that go up and down, side to side, and around.  Also, we play board games.  Some of the board games we play are Monopoly, Sorry, and Scene It.  In the winter we might go sledding or make snow angels.  Or we might buy snow globes. Snow globes look like they have snow in them.  When you shake it the snow scatters everywhere.  Those are some of the things we do for fun in America.
Those were not all the things we do for fun.  Water parks are a good example of what we do for fun.  A water park is just like an amusement park but instead the rides are full of water.  Go to the movies is a popular thing we do in America.  In a movie theater you can buy popcorn or buy a soda.  If you really wanted to you could buy both.  When you walk into the theater, you have to buy a ticket or else you can not go into the theater.  You walk into the room where the movie is being held and you have to be very quiet so you do not disturb anyone.  When a friend sleeps over your house that is called a sleepover.  A sleepover may be with one person or it might be with a lot of people. By the way puppies are very fun to play with here in this country.  These are the things we do for fun in America.

Halloween

Halloween comes once every year on October 31st. It is a fun and scary night, where everybody dresses up in costumes for fun. Then you go outside you knock on your neighbors’ doors and say ‘trick or treat.’ Then they will put candy in your bag. Halloween is the cause of lots of cavities! Usually people will decorate their house with scary decorations, such as gravestones, jack-o-lanterns, or spider webs. They do this to get into the Halloween spirit and to make their house look like a haunted house. A jack-o-lantern is a pumpkin carved out with a face. On Halloween anybody can trick or treat. Some adults go out in costumes, too. People usually go as werewolves, monsters, witches, and more. When someone has a long driveway it makes it scarier. People can either make their costumes or buy them at the store. Halloween is always fun!
